What is two-step verification?
The number of cyberattacks directed against both individuals and companies has increased exponentially in recent years. For this reason it is so important to protect personal and professional accounts on the Internet: email, social networks ... More and more hackers access all types of accounts and change their password so that the owners cannot access them. Well, two-step verification is the best way to prevent these types of situations. technologyify
What is two-step
verification?
Two-step verification, which is also known as two-factor
authentication (2FA), is a security measure that prevents unauthorized people
from accessing the personal account of a certain service. When you activate
this verification, for example, in the email, when accessing it, in addition to
using the password, you have to provide a unique code. In general, this code is
sent to the mobile phone that you have indicated during the registration by
means of an SMS, although there are also other alternatives such as
applications, phone calls or a security key.
Worth? Of course yes. Imagine that someone got hold of your
password through a phishing attack. If you don't have 2-Step Verification
enabled, a hacker can access your account and take any action that could
negatively impact you. If, on the other hand, you have this security tool
enabled, the cybercriminal would not be able to access the account since, even
if they have the password, they do not have the necessary code to complete the
process.
Do you know what a phishing attack is?
It is one of the techniques most used by cybercriminals
today. To better understand what it consists of, we are going to explain it
with a simple example. Imagine that you have the Gmail electronic service and you
receive an e-mail, supposedly from Google, indicating that there is some kind
of problem with your account.
Attached to the email is a link that you have to click to
log in and fix it. When you click, it redirects you to a page that is very
similar to Gmail, but owned by hackers. Therefore, when you enter your email
address and password, the cybercriminals get hold of the authentication data.
In this way, if you do not have two-step verification
activated, they could enter your Gmail account and use it maliciously.
What advantages does it
offer?
The most prominent advantage of all is that it offers an
additional layer of security to the account, thus preventing someone from
trespassing and accessing the data. Different analyzes have shown that the use
of two-step verification significantly reduces the success of hackers when
accessing third-party data.
It is easy to configure since this option can be activated
in the settings of all accounts. It is a very simple and fast process and thus
the account is protected in the best possible way.
And finally, it should be noted that there are different
methods available. Most websites or applications usually have different
modalities to choose from to activate two-step verification on an account. This
makes it tranquil for you to find one that 100% fits your needs and
preferences.
